A Few Tips For Diesel Engine Repair

A diesel engine has a few different maintenance and repair requirements than a gas engine does. If you have recently bought your first diesel vehicle, it may take a bit of getting used to the differences. Here are a few tips to help you make the change and keep your vehicle in good running condition.

Air Filter

Diesel engines require more air than gas engines. You need to check the air filter more frequently and expect to change it more often. One way to keep tabs on the status of the filter is to install a plastic indicator on the side of the filter. This piece of plastic will change colors as it becomes dirty. If the indicator is dirty, the filter is clogged and needs to be changed.

Oil and Oil Filter

Read the owner's manual to find the proper oil filter for your vehicle and then buy one a bit better. Do not buy a cheap filter to save money, you will end up with particles getting into the engine and causing damage. If you want to reduce the risk of dirty oil clogging up the system, use a synthetic oil of the weight recommended by the vehicle's manufacturer. In addition, synthetic oil breaks down slower than natural oils so you won't have to do as many oil changes.

Coolant Filter

While not all engines require a coolant filter, having one is a good thing. Not only will it coat the surface of the engine block to keep it from overheating, it also has an anti-foaming agent to prevent coolant bubbles on the surface of the engine parts. Since this agent is used up with time, you need to replace the coolant filter regularly.

Gaskets

The gaskets on a diesel engine are put under more pressure and extreme situations than their gas engine counterparts. For this reason, it is important that you check them regularly and tighten the mounting bolts to keep them from leaking. If you notice one gasket in a set is leaking, you should replace the whole set.

A vehicle with a diesel engine will save you money on fuel. Even though the fuel may cost more, the vehicle will use much less. In addition, these engines are more environmentally friendly. They emit lower amounts of carbon dioxides and fewer hydrocarbons. Another benefit is the fact that a diesel engine will last much longer than a gas engine. However, if you do find yourself with engine trouble, find a diesel engine repair services company.
